about
Caroline Calder is a Greenville, South Carolina–based visual artist who has cultivated her passion for painting for over a decade. Her artistic journey began in childhood, encouraged by her family to explore creativity through drawing, coloring, and imaginative projects.

Caroline earned a degree in Marketing from the University of South Carolina while maintaining a deep connection to the arts. Following graduation, she continued to refine and expand her practice through coursework and workshops at Furman University, the Greenville Center for Creative Arts (GCCA), and other regional programs. She works primarily in acrylics and mixed media, continually experimenting with innovative techniques and processes.

Known for her expressive and contemplative style, Caroline’s work is characterized by intuitive use of color, form, texture, and pattern. Inspired by the natural world and the resilience of the human spirit, her paintings are intended to evoke joy and reflection, inviting viewers to imagine the future with optimism and hope.

Caroline’s work has been exhibited at Centre Stage, Fork & Plough, Indie Craft Parade Mini Market, Thornback Gallery, and numerous juried exhibitions throughout Upstate South Carolina, including the Metropolitan Arts Council Open Studios. Her work has received multiple awards and honors from juried art shows, including recognition from the Metropolitan Arts Council Flat Out Under Pressure Juried Exhibition, the Camperdown Juried Art Walk, the Anderson Arts Center, and the BMW Pro‑Am Poster Contest, where she was named both a finalist and People’s Choice Award recipient.
In 2026, Caroline was selected by the Metropolitan Arts Council as the recipient of the Renato Vicario Visual Artist Award, an honor presented to an artist who demonstrates consistent excellence and dedication to their craft. As part of this recognition, her work was featured in MAC’s 2025 Annual Report and served as the visual and color palette inspiration for both the publication and the organization’s Annual Meeting presentation.
artist statement
For me, painting is a means of expressionism and of escapism. My work is an exploration of boundaries and freedoms between what is real and what is possible. I enjoy playing with perspective in my artwork, I am not interested in depicting reality or representation but rather in evoking a feeling or an emotion.

Life experiences inform and inspire my work. Using line, color, texture and shape I seek balance and movement within my composition. I sketch, arrange visual elements to develop exciting designs, and then recreate them in a larger painting. I predominantly paint with acrylics and mixed media while allowing myself to play and experiment with new techniques and processes.
